Mold FAQs
What is mold and where is it found?
Mold is a type of fungus that grows in moist, dark, and warm areas of the home. Attics, basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and other similar areas of the building are common situations that mold can grow.
There is no way to completely rid the home of mold, as mold spores from beneficial and problematic sources are invisible to the naked eye and become airborne during the reproduction process.
What dangers are associated with mold in the home?
Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposure include allergic reaction, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.
How to prevent mold infestations?
Leaks from plumbing, exterior walls and roof, and from the foundation are all common sources of moisture in the home. Left untreated, mold will grow if the conditions are right.
Sealing leaks and sources of moisture, utilizing a dehumidifier, and preventative, scheduled cleaning of high risk areas are way to prevent the growth of mold in buildings. Condensation occurs when warm air is allowed to contact cold surfaces; insulation and vapor barriers can help reduce this type of occurrence.
How to clean infected areas?
Replacement of absorbent building materials may be required. Drying them out and spraying with biocide may prevent replacement.
Cleaning of non-absorbent surfaces with water and detergent is usually sufficient. Hydrogen peroxide, fungicides, and other biocides are available for more difficult situations.
